Yet it’s happening—big time.

Fancy flashin’ your bare skin when the UV index’s peakin’? Think it’s “just a bit of harmless tanning”? Let me enlighten ye. In 2022, over 100,000 Europeans were diagnosed with melanoma—a figure expected to climb to 115,500 by 2040—tragic evidence of rising UV-related harm (pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov). That’s not plucky lobster-pink, that’s serious trouble.

Even more telling: 15,000 deaths in Europe each year from melanoma alone . And UV radiation causes roughly 4% of all cancers in this region—rising to nearly 90% for melanoma in fair-skinned folk (eea.europa.eu). Five sunburns in your lifetime? You’ve just doubled yer melanoma risk. It’s like playing roulette with yer own DNA.

But hey, maybe you reckon sunscreen makes you pale and vitamin-D deficient? Cherry-pick that one tweet all you like, but the European Code Against Cancer backs broad-spectrum SPF 30+, reapplied every couple hours, especially between 11 a.m.–3 p.m. Don’t just slather it on “occasionally”—go ahead, call it vanity. It’s preferable to chemo, leathery skin, and living with regret.

Then we have helmets—oh, helmets. Europe’s all over this, actually, but some of ye still think they’re for wimps.

Cycling without a lid? You’re asking for trouble. Helmets reduce serious head and brain injuries by around 60%, and fatalities by roughly 73% (cyclinguk.org, swov.nl). Motorcyclists aren’t off the hook either—helmets slash fatal head injury risk by ~44% (road-safety.transport.ec.europa.eu). Yet usage rates? Cycling helmet wear in Europe jumps from a feeble 18% in Latvia to about 81% in Malta . Unsurprisingly, places with voluntary use—like the Netherlands—they’re seeing campaigns to gun awareness up because older and e-bike riders are crashing more (theguardian.com).

Look, the brain is delicate. You fall off, even at 4 km/h, and you could crack your helmet—and your skull. A single tumble from bumbling along can be devastating (reddit.com). Yet instead of strapping on CE‑certified helmets (look out for EN 1078, MIPS, or fancy airbag units like Hövding praised by Folksam for cutting concussion risk eight‑fold) some of you treat helmets like accessories for Instagram selfies (en.wikipedia.org).

So what happens when you ignore common sense?

You may look chilled now, but later you could be staring down treatment for melanoma or dealing with life-changing brain injuries. The EU data says it loud: tens of thousands getting diagnosed, thousands dying, head injury rates plummeting with helmet use—not to mention the costs to health systems and families.

It’s utterly daft to gamble your future like that. But hey, if you want to roll the dice—go ahead. Just don’t moan when your wins come with a hospital wristband.

What sensible Europeans do instead:

Use broad-spectrum SPF 30+, generous coats and reapply.

Avoid peak UV hours—11 a.m. to 3 p.m. is for tanning regrets, not lounge regrets.

Spot unusual moles early—the ABCDEs matter.

Clamp helmets onto every ride: bike, e‑bike, moped or motorbike.

Support legislation or voluntary campaigns to normalise helmet use.

Let’s be clear: common sense isn’t extinct, unless you choose to let it slip with your helmet strap or sunscreen tube left at home.
Want to be sun-kissed with skincancer and helmet free on chewing brain‑toast?
Be my guest just stay away from me and my family ´cause we don´t want to attend your funeral.

I’ll be the one sun‑ready with SPF and a helmet, laughing when you’re sunburnt and sorry.
I have to go slather my SPF and don my Hövding before venturing out.

Until later /L

Let’s cut to the chase: skipping sunscreen or bailing on helmets in Europe this summer is nothing short of bonkers.
